Farne Islands

I visited the Farne Islands (off the coast of Northumberland) last week. The boat put us ashore on Staple Island for an hour. I took binoculars but never used them – the birds were so close.

Guillemots. I told the warden that I had last landed here 50 years ago. He said, ’50 years ago we had 1,000 gullemots – today we have 33000.’

Cormorants. One benefit of a pair bond is that you get preened in otherwise unreachable places.
