Recently I had a week on solitary retreat on the shore (30 paces from high water mark) opposite Lindisfarne. One day, I visited the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast. I went across to the Farnes on Billy Shiels’ (MBE) boat from Seahouses.
Hosts of birds were busy with family arrangements.

We landed on one island sanctuary for an hour.

Murres or Guillemots (From the French for ‘William’)

Green Cormorants or Shags like to decorate their home – as with fisherman’s gloves.

Everyone needs to watch out for Herring Gulls – they like eggs.

Here you can watch the puffins – from 12 feet away.

Rafts of Guillemots

Face the wall my darlings, till the gentlemen go by.
